The Physics Major

We are currently revising the physics major to accomodate the growing number of students who have strong interests in physics, but who are also thinking of majoring in engineering-related fields. At present we are offering 4 areas of concentration for students majoring in physics: General Physics, Astrophysics, Materials Physics, and Mechanical Systems Physics. These programs all require the same courses for the few years, but differ in the upper-level electives.

The General Physics track takes courses from over a wide range of physics and physics-related subjects during the last two years.

The Astrophysics concentration consists of a mixture of theoretical and observational astronomy courses to satisfy the upper-level electives.

The Materials Physics track is designed, in part, to make it possible for students in the Materials/Cermics program to double-major in physics, although students who just want a physics degree are welcome to take that track as well

The Mechanical Systems track recognizes the significant overlap between some of the upper-level Mechanical Engineering offerings and physics, thus allowing "M.E" students an opportunity to double-major as well.
